My Mission Statement

I write to serve, to unite, to educate. I write to share literature and flesh out ideas that may be of interest to others. I write to document an emotion, experience, or a blip in time. My mission is to write in such a way that the reader is reminded that we can find humor in all situations. It's one of the great blessings of life.

Friday Morning--I'm on Cloud 9

Last night at the auction, I purchased a Floyd Cooper original, and I couldn't be more thrilled. I literally cried when I touched it. It's from his book about the nativity, and it is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. It will be a source of inspiration on so many levels. Good stuff. Also a group of us went in on lunch and a critique at--get this--Patti Gauch's HOUSE in New York. Did you HEAR me? So I've been jumping up and down pretty much constantly about it, and I'm sure I'll continue to do so for a long time. Amazing. I told her we'd happily wash dishes.

The Highlights Writing Conference was first envisoned by Kent Brown's grandfather, and I'm so touched by the family feeling of the place. I'm certain that much of the magic is owed to that simple truth. Nearly every member of the family is here helping in some capacity with love, encouragement and respect for all of us writers. It's very, very touching and goes a long way toward a safe and comfortable atmosphere for growing and learning. I imagine the founder would be enormously proud of his descendants and the way they've grown this program. I can't imagine a better tribute to him. And the work alone is such a gift, a service to others that it's spiritual in nature the way Floyd's art is. God is not just smiling down, but grinning down on this place, I'm sure of it. What an honor to be a part of it.
