My Mission Statement

I write to serve, to unite, to educate. I write to share literature and flesh out ideas that may be of interest to others. I write to document an emotion, experience, or a blip in time. My mission is to write in such a way that the reader is reminded that we can find humor in all situations. It's one of the great blessings of life.

Chautauqua and Silly Suppers

Yes, it's true. My children had a 'silly supper' last night. Their old fashioned cafeteria trays sported popcorn, popsicles, cheese sticks, rolled up slice of ham, and a big dill pickle. Oh, yes, and an oreo. They made it themselves. And they didn't die of malnutrition, social services hasn't taken them, and no one's eyes have rolled back in his or her head---yet. Sometimes it's okay to just let it go. My 8YO even let the dog lick his pickle occasionally as he ate it. Maybe I shouldn't have told you that part. Anyway, this update was my monday morning gift to you. A reminder that being a parent isn't about making everything perfect. It's just filling life with love.

I'm haunted by the fact that Chautauqua Institute is going on without me!! Which is ridiculous because it went on for years and years without me. I mean, I go one year, and I think I can't miss another one? All the same, I find myself looking for a blog about it, reading the list of instructors, being jealous of the attendees...Sheesh.

There's a huge pile of laundry downstairs calling my name, but kids continue to sleep, and I don't want to wake them. At least that's what I keep telling myself. This is camp preparation week which is kind of like moving. I have a ton of things to do to get these kids ready for camp. I can't believe my 13yo is going for a month again, but I'm glad for her. It was very good for her last year. And my 11 YO is going for 12 days. They're both excited, and I'm just glad we get to take them on the same day. Saves us a trip. The boys are going to miss their sisters, though.

It's kind of rainy this morning. I like rain at the beach because it forces us to relax a bit. When it's nice out (which is 99% of the time), I feel like we should be out in it. But when it rains, we can hang out inside guilt free. Except for the whole laundry thing.

Well, I have a ton of writing to do. I'll post another excerpt from my new novel soon if anyone wants to see. I'm having fun with it, and I hope others will, too! Have a great day, and enjoy your kids.

On very rare occasions, my mother would give us ice cream for breakfast, covered in crunchy cereal. It was a special Saturday morning thing and probably only happened a handful of times in my entire growing up years.

I tried to do that for my own kids, and they weren't interested. But I still believe that mothers create some special, magical realm when they break the rules for a day.

Thanks for sharing!

I LOVE that idea, and can't wait to try it myself. Sounds good with raisin bran. Hmmmm. I'm sure my kids would want to try it with something like Lucky Charms, though. THANKS for reading and sharing.
