My Mission Statement

I write to serve, to unite, to educate. I write to share literature and flesh out ideas that may be of interest to others. I write to document an emotion, experience, or a blip in time. My mission is to write in such a way that the reader is reminded that we can find humor in all situations. It's one of the great blessings of life.

Ah...Poetry Friday

Let's take another stab at it, shall we? Thank you for joining me today for another POETRY FRIDAY. Now I know the thought of it sends some of you screaming back to check your facebook, but hang with me a minute. If I can just get you thinking about poetry, walking to the meter, feeling the music course through your veins, then that's a good thing. If you give your own poetry a shot today, then that's an even better thing. If you go on to become the next poet laureate, well, remember to thank me in your speech.
I wanted to write sonnets today, but I'm not in a sonnet kind of mood. I'm in more of a Shel Silverstein mood. My favorite first line of his is, "I cannot go to school today said little Peggy Anne McKay." What delicious possibilities could follow. So I'm going to share something goofy. I had high hopes for this one, but I could never get it rolling. ha I crack myself up.

A Fish Named Sushi

I got a little shaky
At dinnertime each night
When they put chopsticks by my bowl
And cracked up at the sight.

Words can really pack a punch
There’s power in a name
Their choice robbed me of my joy.
I’d never be the same.

Then one day I gurgled, “Enough!
Something must be done.”
I crafted a plan to save myself:
I’d woo the little one.

I put on my finest show.
It was no time to be shy.
I charmed her with my fluttering fin.
I smiled and batted my eye.

She talked and sang to me,
Moved the chopsticks, changed the water.
I worried she was cleaning up
To prepare me for my slaughter.

Then her mom called, “Sushi Night,”
And I thought it was the end
But she said, “No, thanks. I’ll feed myself.
Now Sushi is my friend.”

I wished that I could hug her
Or lick her face with glee
I felt the awesome power of words.
For hers had set me free.

When I wrote this poem
I thought it would be great
We'd fall in love with Sushi
Not want her on our plate.

But it only made me hungry
I've had wasabi by the pound.
Sushi has been on my mind
But my heart, she never found.

This is an example of something from my "never made it into an envelope or even close" file. If you'd like to share something like that, write something fresh, or just laugh at me. Or take inspiration from Shel Silverstein's first line. I can't tell you how many times I've written from that one! The choice is yours today. But I hope you like Sushi! MMMMM...

Hi Donna! Donna Earnhardt here. :) I'm a poetry nut. So, yay for you on this poetry day! You are very creative, indeed. :)

I'm going to take a shot at a less than serious poem. (and a little on the YUCK side) :)

Why Men and Fish can't be Friends
The day was bright
the day was great
until I ate my best friend, NATE

When we were small
we played and swam
around the edge of Grampa's Dam

We splashed and jumped
we hid and dove
and stayed away from Danger Grove

We shared our dreams
and hoped for more
than those we knew who'd gone before

But sadly, in our second year
I watched our friendship disappear

And others saw the difference, too
While Nate stayed small...I grew and grew

In my defense, I didn't know
that hunger could affect me so
Nor did I understand that Nate
would one day wind up on my plate

But Gramps had said it wouldn't last
and made that final, fateful cast

Nate will live in memory
and all the things he taught to me

he taught me dives
he taught me tricks
and taught me not to swim with cliques

He taught me how to speak in BASS
and how to hide in reeds and grass

But, I'll remember Nate the most...
served with rice and Texas Toast

RoFL!! Yes, peta would love us. We can be the new VPs of marketing. :)

I'm part of an online group and some of us are poets. I've loved poetry for a long time. Matter of fact, I have sold a couple to Highlights. I just received a bear card for 3 more. I'm hoping for the best. :)

How about you? I see you like Shel. Me, too (just not his Adult stuff. It made ME blush...and that's saying a lot!)
