My Mission Statement

I write to serve, to unite, to educate. I write to share literature and flesh out ideas that may be of interest to others. I write to document an emotion, experience, or a blip in time. My mission is to write in such a way that the reader is reminded that we can find humor in all situations. It's one of the great blessings of life.

Grateful Wed in a Winter Wonderland

We have snow again today! It's such a magical thing to wake up to snow. (except I woke up and saw it at 4 AM and was too excited to go back to sleep!) The roads are totally clear, I mean TOTALLY CLEAR, but the kids are out of school. So I have four kids home which wasn't exactly my plan today, but that's okay! We will enjoy.

Last night I dreamed that I wrote TEA WITH MUSSOLINI. At some point in the dream I said to my agent, "I think this would make a good movie." Pretty funny. I just rented the movie, but I haven't seen it yet. Clearly I've already bonded with the book enough to think I wrote it--ha.

Remember when I did NaNoWriMo? WEll, I wrote about 35,000 words of a novel, didn't finish, but made a very thorough start. Anyway, last night I snuggled up in bed (ignoring the rest of my family watching Hollywood Week, which I HATE--I"ll rejoin when they're down to 24 people, so I don't get too attached to anyone) and read the first 40 or so pages of my NaNoWriMo novel, and guess what? It was really good. Almost like someone else wrote it. I'm telling you, folks, there's something to that mass output and doing it EVERY DAY that benefits your voice, the story, etc. So anyway, I'm reading it through, so I know what happened and then I'm going to NaNoWriMo again until it's finished. Remember when I gave up writing novels? Well, I'm back. The fire is in my belly again.

Oh, I also want to give a Chautauqua plug here again. If any of you writerly people out there haven't been to the Highlights Institute at Chautauqua, I highly recommend it. And I know there are scholarships available. CHECK IT OUT TODAY. Donna Jo Napoli will be there this summer along with my favorite Spinellis, Patti Lee Gauch, and tons of other fabulous people. It's an incredible experience.

So today I'm super grateful for so many random things. Here goes:
1. Fresh, hot coffee
2. Raw almonds
3. Snowflakes
4. The satisfying tick-tock of the clock here in my dining room
5. Fireplaces
6. Family bonding over American Idol (before and after Hollywood Week, of course)
7. Great football
8. Ballard's Design catalog--I rarely order anything, but it's my favorite one that comes through my front door
9. The satisfaction of reading something you've written that's good
10. The joy of finishing a piece after months of angst
11. A clean kitchen
12. An unpacked suitcase
13. A packed suitcase
14. Leaving the gym in the knowledge that you've just worked out
15. Fresh, cold water
16. My crock pot
17. Casserole of the Month Club
18. A new ink cartridge
19. Award-winning books on their way from Barnes and Noble
20. Unconditional love of my dogs

Have a great day! Pause and be grateful.

The snowflakes are so big and pretty.

I told ya, didn't I? That your going back and going back was hindering your creativity? I'm sure the words you have now are great. I can't wait to see the finished product...BEFORE you analyze it to death.

Snowed here this morning, too, about 9:30. Nice big flakes, until the ground was well dusted. Suddenly,it was gone and the sun came out.

Can I join Casserole of the Month Club?
