My Mission Statement

I write to serve, to unite, to educate. I write to share literature and flesh out ideas that may be of interest to others. I write to document an emotion, experience, or a blip in time. My mission is to write in such a way that the reader is reminded that we can find humor in all situations. It's one of the great blessings of life.

In Praise of Editor, Jennifer Pooley Summer at Tiffany by Marjorie Hart

Jennifer Pooley is an editor at Harper Collins. I recently heard her speak at a James River Writers conference. Like many editors these days, she is young and beautiful. She is also eloquent and impressive when she talks about books. She clearly has a passion for what she does, and I was very touched by that fire for her work. Long story short, I wrote her a brief note to thank her for coming to the conference, and yesterday I received the NICEST note from her along with two books she has edited. One book I nearly finished last night. It's called SUMMER AT TIFFANY by Marjorie Hart. I know you've seen it as I had, but I just hadn't sprung for it. It is the most darling story. I LOVE it. It's actually a memoir of sorts, written by an 83 year old woman about the summer of 1945 when she lived and worked in New York at none other than TIFFANY! I mean, how cool is that? And what a time period--just think of all that's cooking in the world in 1945. GREAT read. Check it out today. Would also be a great gift for your mom or grandma, anyone who would enjoy such a youthful account of that time period.

I'll write about the other book when I read it. But here's the thing--what a very cool gesture on the part of Jennifer Pooley. It's something I will never forget because at this stage of my writing life, editors are still elusive and mysterious. I know that sounds corny, but it feels true. I've only sent my new novel to a couple of agents, not even an editor yet.

Happy Tuesday, everyone. I'm off to write my 10 pages plus I have a little boy still sick at home. Write on, sistes. Nano starts soon. Just do it!

Hi Marjorie,
Love your list of books - I'll definitely check out Summer at Tiffany and some of the children's books as well. Good luck with Nano!
